portraitThe portrait in painting

Portrait painting is a genre of painting where the intention is to show the visual appearance of the model. The term is generally applied to the representation of human subjects. In addition to painting, portraits can also be done using other media such as printmaking, lithography, photography, video and digital media.

The term “portrait painting” can also describe the actual painted portrait. Portrait painters can create their work to order for public and private individuals or they can be inspired by admiration or affection for the subject. Portraits are often important state and family documents, as well as keepsakes.

Historically, portrait paintings primarily celebrate the rich and powerful. Over time, however, it became more common for middle-class clients to have portraits of their families and colleagues taken. Today, portrait paintings are still commissioned by governments, corporations, groups, clubs and individuals.
