Music

Music has existed in all human societies since prehistoric times.

It is an art and a cultural activity consisting in combining sounds and silences over time.

The main ingredients are rhythm (how to combine sounds over time), pitch (combination in frequencies), nuances and timbre.

Today it is considered a form of modern poetry.

It gives rise to creations (works of art created by composers), representations.

It uses certain rules or composition systems, from the simplest to the most complex (often musical notes, scales and others).

She can use various objects, the body, the voice, but also specially designed musical instruments, and more and more all sounds (concrete, syntheses, abstracts, etc.).

Music has existed in all human societies since prehistoric times.

It is both a form of individual expression (in particular the expression of feelings), a source of collective gathering and pleasure (celebration, song, dance) and symbol of a cultural, national or spiritual community (national anthem, traditional music , folk music, religious music, military music, etc.).

History:

The history of music is a particularly rich and complex subject, mainly because of its characteristics:

the difficulty stems first from the age of music, a universal phenomenon dating back to prehistoric times, which gave rise to the formation of traditions which developed separately across the world over millennia.

There are therefore a multitude of very long Music Histories according to cultures and civilizations.

Western music (classical music or pop-rock in the broadest sense) did not take on the appearance of international benchmarks until the 16th century, and still very partially.

The difficulty also comes from the diversity of forms of music within the same civilization:

scholarly music, elite music, official music, religious music, popular music.

This ranges from very elaborate forms to popular forms like lullabies.

A cultural heritage of a particularly wide diversity, unlike other arts practiced in a more restricted or elitist way (literature, theater …).

Finally, with music, the art of the moment, the particular question of sources arises:

the absence of a rating system for part of world music prevents us from really knowing the extent of the music of the past, tradition has probably only saved a limited number.

The realization of a universal synthesis appears very difficult because a lot of History of music deals essentially with the History of Western music.

In general, it is only possible to refer to books and articles specialized by civilization or by genre of music.
