The Ukulele, just by looking at it, causes a trendy mocking smile, when you don’t know it.
But from the first scraped notes, it’s a smile of astonishment, then of happiness and joie de vivre that sets in.
My inspiration comes from the documentary film, Hawaii, the soul of the ukulele, directed by Antoine Laguerre in 2019. Production, ZED for ARTE France , ARTE France
Main presenter during this trip, passionate Joann Sfar (“Rabbi’s cat”) and Ukulele player, flies to Hawaii to discover the mother earth of this legendary instrument.
But also the culture that surrounds it. His goal, to flush out the Ukulele of his dreams, steeped in history and charged with the famous Hawaiian spirit of the Aloha.

In the footsteps of designer Joann Sfar, a musical, pictorial and cultural journey in the footsteps of the legendary little Hawaiian guitar, the Ukulele.
The pocket guitar, imported in 1879 by Portuguese people from Madeira who came to harvest sugar cane, is the vector of a philosophy specific to the archipelago.
The spirit of Aloha, which condenses hospitality, joy, love and respect.
Brushes in hand, Joann Sfar sets out to find the ideal instrument and meets artisans, musicians, dancers and guardians of Hawaiian culture …
