The tree frog is a small frog that lives mainly in Europe.

The little story of the frog and the weather forecast.

In 1863, the zoologist Auguste Duméril (1812-1870), professor at the Museum of Natural History in Paris, wrote this: Tree frogs, or tree frogs, announce rain by their croaking, we can make a hygrometer or a barometer living by putting one of these animals in a vase where we take care to give it water and insects for its food. It could thus be kept for up to seven consecutive years. Equipped in their glass prison with a small ladder, their ascent indicates that the weather will be dry.

The tree frog is an amphibian that is part of the Hylidae family.

This small green frog is mainly represented in France by two species: the tree frog (Hyla arborea) living in the 2/3 North of France and the southern tree frog (Hyla meridionalis) which is present in all regions where the climate remains mild. . In Corsica, the Sardinian tree frog (Hyla sarda) is in charge.

These frogs all have in common a small size (3 to 6 cm) and a beautiful apple green color that is sometimes very bright. A black band starting from the tip of the nostril to the hind legs creates a very successful contrast. Note that in southern tree frogs, this band is much shorter, stopping above the foreleg.

This distinctive sign makes it possible to recognize the two species just like the song of the male, very fast in the arboreal species and slower in the southern one. It is not therefore a legend: even among frogs, in the South we know how to take our time!

The Sardinian tree frog, on the other hand, resembles the arboreal species but may have slight brown spots on the back.
What strikes you when you hold a tree frog in your hand is the softness and extreme delicacy of the skin. By approaching closer it will even be possible to distinguish the golden pupils of the animal !
