Origins

In an increasingly individualistic era, the traits of self-centered personalities are revealed.

But according to psychiatrist and author Marie-France Hirigoyen, there are several degrees of narcissism, from megalomaniacs to narcissistic perverts.

Selfish ? Megalomaniac ? Psychopath ?

There is no shortage of qualifiers to describe the traits of narcissistic personalities.

Worse, they almost have the “wind in their sails”, the fault of an increasingly competitive and individualistic society.

But instead of denouncing the evils of the time, this semantic overuse tends to devalue these very different terms, which actually represent different pathological degrees.

Because obviously, not all narcissists fall in love with their reflections in the water, nor with their selfie.

If loving yourself and having self-confidence is obviously not a fault or a disturbance, it can become so when this confidence overflows and the individual puts himself forward, to the detriment of others.

It is from there that narcissism becomes pathological. And even within these disorders, there are different “categories”.

Who are the Narcissus ?

According to psychiatrist Marie-France Hirigoyen, author of Les Narcisse (Ed.
The Discovery), there are different categories of narcissistic pathologies. The “grandiose and megalomaniac narcissus”, “the vulnerable Narcissus” and finally, “the narcissistic or psychopathic perverts” who show specific criteria.

Some experts consider that these disorders are two aspects which are the same problem. Other than that they are distinct pathologies which both hide a great fragility.

There is a classic tendency to classify narcissistic pathologies into two main categories. By excess of self-love, either grandiose (or megalomaniac) narcissism or, conversely, by insufficient self-love, or vulnerable narcissism.

These two pathologies come from the same problem. They also mask great fragility, a lack of self-confidence, doubts about his skills, his ability to be loved.

Magnificent narcissus and megalomaniacs

First category, that of grandiose Narcissus.

Are thus considered individuals who have an inability to love and respect the other for what he is and not for what he brings to them, and an inability to detach from themselves in order to open up to l ‘other.

More generally, the grandiose Narcissus considers itself superior to the others and thinks that it should benefit from freebies.

At work or in the evenings, he puts himself forward and he values himself at the expense of others.

It is often at this point in the description that images of friends or colleagues come to mind. If in the first moments, his behavior can seduce and give him a good job, relationships usually end badly.

The megalomaniac Narcissus.

The megalomaniac Narcissus know better than everyone, and everything that comes out of their mouths is simply exceptional. So much so that sometimes they like to listen to each other again.

Self-centered, these Narcissus speak only of them, their “extraordinary”, “innovative” or “revolutionary” achievements and projects.

They know better than everyone, and everything that comes out of their mouths is simply exceptional.

So much so that sometimes they like to listen to each other again. They think they are more beautiful, more intelligent, more important than anyone.

And they are not that rare. The expert thus quotes names of political, sports or cultural celebrities.

Not all megalomaniac Narcissi are detestable. Some are brilliant, charming or talented. But it often happens that they are envious and jealous of those who shine more than them.

Same thing in love

After an often idyllic start, the promises fade and gives way to narcissistic seduction intended to fascinate the other, but not to fill it.

Not very affectionate or involved, the grandiose Narcissus only needs the admiration of his or her spouse.

Some of them do not like to get involved for fear of showing any weakness.

And don’t tell yourself that it can change over time! We do not recover from a narcissistic personality disorder, at best, this pathology can stabilize.

Vulnerable narcissus.

In the second category, that of vulnerable Narcissus, the clinical picture is much less specific.

Which can falsify its detection. This pathology is not easy to differentiate from other clinical diagnoses.

In particular borderline, schizotypic or paranoid personality disorders.
However, as the specialist reminds us, failing and vulnerable narcissism is much more frequent than the grandiose pole.

Also, note that some clinicians consider this category to be the most serious, as it can sometimes lead to suicide.

Victim of manipulation.

Similar to their megalo counterparts, vulnerable Narcissus have fantasies of success and success, and think that everything is due to them.

In addition, they place undue importance on recognition and what makes them extremely dependent on the gaze of others.

Except that instead of being euphoric about their own success, it makes them anxious, envious and sometimes depressed.

Generally rather discreet and reserved, they seek consideration and love for others by plaintive seduction, guilt and sometimes manipulation. Selfie moi m aime – Original Painting.

Sensitive narcissus.

Behind a presentation of gentleness, inhibition and vulnerability, the sensitive Narcissus are scrupulous, ambitious, but also extremely sensitive people.

Through her own observations, the author explains that she herself distinguishes two profiles of vulnerable Narcissus.

On the one hand, individuals with low self-esteem, a feeling of worthlessness or illegitimacy, which pushes them to always want more external validations.

On the other hand, a second profile of individuals who have a very high self-esteem, but who remain suspicious.

Behind a presentation of gentleness, inhibition and vulnerability, sensitive Narcissus are scrupulous, ambitious, but also extremely sensitive people, constantly fearing that they are disrespectful.

It’s the affective that dominates their home, but their reactions are more depressive than aggressive.

Except when they suffer a situation perceived as a serious humiliation, which can trigger a reaction of disproportionate revenge.
