Inspired by the famous French engraver Oscar ROTY for his engraving “the seeder ».

My seeder

The sower is a French pictorial allegory invented by Oscar Roty around 1887, presenting a young woman wearing a Phrygian cap sowing seeds in the rising sun, and which has become over time one of the symbols of the French Republic, reproduced in particular on coins and stamps.

The origin of La Semeuse dates back to an unsuccessful 1887 project for an award medal for the Ministry of Agriculture.

In 1896, when the Minister of Finance ordered new coins, Oscar Roty reworked the allegory of 1887 in a less naturalistic style, closer to Art Nouveau and better suited to the constraints of the industrial coinage of coins.

The model

The model which appears in full length on known photographs (one visible at the Roty museum, the other at that of La Poste) is sometimes identified with Charlotte Ragot, who was actually one of the five professional models regularly employed by the artist. However, she, then aged thirty, had stopped posing after her marriage in 1890.

It is therefore generally accepted, following notably the curator of the Roty museum Pierre Marc Chantereau, that Oscar Roty was inspired by his Semeuse, not from one of his usual models, but from a young Italian immigrant of his Montparnasse district, Rosalina (or Rosalinda) Pesce, whose appearance corresponded to his idea and which he no longer used afterwards.

However, the date of the girl’s birth, March 8, 1885 in Gallinaro, gave her eleven years when the work was created, instead of the supposed fifteen years: this led Pierre Marc Chantereau to hypothesis that the artist would in fact have used several models and used Rosalina Pesce for the profile of her face.

The Semeuse type of 1897 was reintroduced on the occasion of the transition to the “new franc”, from 1960. The euro coins from France are illustrated by the modernized Semeuse by Laurent Jorio. In 2008, Joaquin Jimenez’s Kinetic Sower appeared.

La Semeuse, which appears from 1903 on postage stamps, was originally engraved by Eugène Mouchon, after an embossed plaque provided by Roty.

Biography

Oscar Roty was born in Belleville, June 11, 1846, under the July monarchy. He was the son of a modest Parisian teacher.

He is best known for one of his works, called La Semeuse. The origin of this one goes back to a project of medal of 1887, remained unfinished, which Oscar Roty takes again in 1896 to answer an order of the ministry for Finances.

The first Semeuse coins came into circulation in 1897. From 1903, the Semeuse also appeared on postage stamps.

Pigment Acrylic Paints

Today, only nostalgia can explain the use of oil paintings.

Acrylic pigment paints are a type of paint using pigments mixed with an aqueous emulsion of polyacrylic or polyvinyl synthetic resins, dilutable with water. Like oil paints, acrylic paints last over time, but oil paints are harmful and polluting. Today all cars are painted with water-based paints.
