I hear hissing the train is a 1962 French song performed, the same year, by Richard Anthony who made it a great success and by Hugues Aufray.

This is an adaptation of 500 Miles, an American folk song, probably written by Hedy West. The French lyrics are by Jacques Plante.

The song

A young man hears the whistle of a train in the distance, he knows that it will forever take the one he loves. He did not have the courage to come to the quay to say goodbye …

“I thought it was better / Leave us without a farewell / I would not have had the heart to see you again / But I hear the train whistling, But I hear the train whistling, How sad a train whistling in the evening ”

He already regrets it, but too late.

“I almost ran towards you / I almost shouted towards you / It was hardly if I could hold myself back (…) /
And I hear this train whistling / And I hear this train whistling / I will hear this train whistling all my life ”

Context

At the beginning of the summer of 1962, it was in the context of the end of the war in Algeria (July 5, 1962), that J’entends siffler le train interpreted by Richard Anthony came out.

With nostalgic music, the refrain of this love song reminds conscripts and their families of the trains that took them to battle. In retrospect, Richard Anthony evokes the fact:

“The young people were going to wage this dirty war in Algeria. They were singing it seems in the barracks. We really didn’t do it on purpose. ”

Reception

Both Richard Anthony and Hugues Aufray versions were released in July 1962.

The disc of Hugues Aufray6, which has not yet fully attained the status of star, goes unnoticed, while that of Anthony is a great success.

Its version which however is only one title of the side B of a super 45 turns entitled J’irai twister le blues, sold more than 1.5 million copies, becoming moreover the first tube of variety history summer.

This success changed the image of Richard Anthony, who was perceived more as a crooner than a rocker.

Much later, on stage when he interpreted the title, Hugues Aufray said in preamble: that in 1959, after having released his first album, he was invited to the United States by Maurice Chevalier and that it was there that he discovered the music that would inspire his work.

Returning to France, he has in his luggage a large number of songs including 500 Miles (in), which he entrusts to an editor (which he does not name) and which the latter (“unscrupulous” according to Aufray), distributed to several artists …

The French adaptation of 500 Miles is entrusted to someone (“who has nothing to do with this error,” says Hugues Aufray), who made it a great success. But it was me who brought this title to France.

In 2011, Hugues Aufray on the album Troubador since 1948, recorded a new duet version with Françoise Hardy
