A retrospective study by Colorado veterinarians and academics analyzed the number of emergency admissions of dogs and cats according to the lunar cycle (out of a total of 11,940 dogs and cats admitted over 11 years, from 1992 to 2002) and depending on the reason for the emergency visit (bite, cardiac arrest, convulsions, ophthalmology problem, serious digestive problem, trauma, multiple illnesses, neoplasia or intoxication).
The number of visits increases statistically significantly at the time of the full moon, for both dogs and cats. The authors do not explain this increase and suggest that this fact be taken into account for the organization of the work of the large veterinary clinics, while inviting to verify these data by an even larger study.
Since predators are more active on full moon nights, it is plausible that they are at greater risk of injury or cardiac arrest.
